The 333 metre long ‘super cruise liner’ Splendida breezed into Malta last week on its maiden voyage, apparently making it the largest ship to enter Grand Harbour. The ship which was carrying nearly 4000 passengers is 67 meters tall, weighs 137,936 tonnes and has 1,637 cabins. It has 17,000 square meters of carpeting, 65,000 light bulbs and it also the only cruise liner in the world to stock Delicata’s D.O.K. Malta wines, Medina.
The two Delicata D.O.K.wines listed on the ships prestigious wine list were chosen as part of the ships ‘Mediterranean Wine Selection’ after an Italian wine importer submitted them following an unexpected tasting of the wines last year. The wine importer was given the wines as a gift by someone who had visited Malta and he subsequently submitted them to the cruise liner for possible listing. The wines were then tasted, selected and delivered earlier this year. The two Medina wines chosen were the 2007 Medina Vermentino Zibibbo DOK Malta and the 2007 Medina Syrah Carignan Grenache DOK Malta.
The Splendida is the latest flagship of MSC Cruises and is represented locally by Hamilton Travel. |
