BETTIJA’RT – OVERVIEW

Bettija’rt | wine.art.living is an exciting initiative by the Delicata winery that seeks to fuse Malta’s best wines, the arts and the good life.

Malta’s Barrel Art Competition

10 artists, 10 barrels: the inaugural art competition under the auspices of the Delicata winery is on.

Ten finalist are busy directing their creativity and artistic skills towards the transformation of a decommissioned barrique (a wine barrel or bettija in Maltese)  into a stunning painted work of art (dubbed a bettija’rt).

The inspiration and theme, which each finished piece has to reflect, is “the joys of wine, art and good living in Malta today and through the ages”.

Through Bettija’rt | wine.art.living, the Delicata winery, in association with Is-Suq Tal-Belt Valletta Food Market, aspires to bring the arts, good living and wine enjoyment into everyone’s daily live.

The iconic Victorian-era venue of Is-Suq Tal-Belt Valletta Food Market, located in the heart of the nation’s capital, will be the social hub and take centre stage in the showcasing of the collective art exhibition of all so-called bettija’rts.

The recipient of the 2019 Bettija’rt | wine.art.living prize receives a cash prize of €750. The runner-up wins €250, and each participant gets honoured with a certificate, a bespoke double magnum of Delicata’s award-winning Gran Cavalier Syrah and VIP hospitality to the Delicata Classic Wine Festival.

All completed artworks or bettija’rts will go on display from the inauguration date on 12 March through 25 April at Is-Suq Tal-Belt Food Market Valletta for viewing and public voting, with the winner being determined by jury panel decision by 25 April 2019.

The Creative Bunch

For this first, inaugural barrel painting competition, the response to Delicata’s call for artists was overwhelming.

The selection process was hard but here are the ten artist finalists for this year’s 2019 Bettija’rt | wine.art.living.

They are, in no particular order, Joseph Barbara, Claire Attard Vella, David Xuereb, Caroline Said Lawrence, Carmel Bonello, Zack Ritchie, Francis Galea, Priscilla Gatt, Donald Camilleri and Sara Pace.
